I get this a lot – most people want me to tell them if their ideas are going to work before they’re even introduced to the world. And when the ideas are actioned and nothing goes to plan, it can put the brakes on everything!
If you’re looking for a guaranteed outcome with your business then you’re probably not cut out to be an entrepreneur.
Actually, if you want guaranteed results I recommend that you get a job with a paycheck.
You won’t be good at first. You might be really bad at first! But you will get better… it will become easier… and it will start to make a difference.
The results WILL come, but they may not show up the way you anticipate or thought they should.
So, do you want me to tell you if your business will succeed (or not)? Tune in to this episode to find out!

You’re listening to marketing chaos, episode number 121. Oh my goodness. It is raining. It’s pouring. It’s coming down. Cats and dogs here in Australia. And I literally had to swim across the parking lot. When I dropped my kids off at school yesterday, it was so flooded. It was up to my knees. I had to park so I could like,
it was just crazy. I had, I was like, all right, I’m clearly getting wet. So I just got out. I had the kids crawl across the seat and I lifted them out one by one and put them on the sidewalk. And then I had to drive and park it in another place with like, oh my goodness. And I had brought the dogs for some reason.
Cause I was like, oh, they’re just going to go in the house. Cause they refuse to go out in the yard to go. We always, when it’s raining, like I can’t put the dogs down. Cause they’ll drown. Cause it’s like, it’s so deep. It is literally up to my knees. The kids thought it was fun, but then they had wet socks and shoes all day,
which it’s just gross. Right. But yeah, we’re we’re okay. It’s just, it’s supposed to rain for the next 10 weeks or something. I’m hoping that they’re wrong and we’ll have some sunny patches, but yeah, it’s, it’s weird. I had to put a little doggy vest on my little one because she is so scrawny and he’s just like curled up in the corner here in her little rain coat vest thing and the tiniest little ball that you can imagine so that she stays warm on what was supposed to be the kid’s bean bag,
but has turned into the giant dog bed. Anyway, I am doing this episode called do you want me to tell you if your business will succeed or not? Because I can tell you, I can read the future. I have crystal balls and the Palm readings and Palm leaves. No, what’s the thing. Tea leaves, Palm readings and tea leaf.
I don’t know. No I don’t, but I can tell you probably whether or not your business is going to succeed based on a couple of things. And one of them is just something that came up in a call. I did a few weeks ago with someone and I just, I wanted to say, you know what, honey, you’re probably not cut out for this,
this whole online business entrepreneur thing. And here’s why, so this person was creating, starting to create their business. And she was already getting frustrated and, and tired and wanting to give up and saying, it’s not happening. You know, I’ve been doing this for so long and nothing’s happening. Like it’s not working. And I, I just want to give up.
And I was like, oh goodness, well, you probably should look for a job then because it’s not going to get easier. And you’re going to have to probably try a lot of things that aren’t going to work. But here’s the deal. What I really think was the problem. And I did say this to her, was you the real problem here is that you’re attaching an outcome.
I E results to what you’re doing rather than just experimenting. And if you are not just experimenting and exploring, you’re going to feel that way. You’re going to get frustrated. You’re going to get run down. You’re going to get burnout. You’re going to get tired frustrated. Now I’m not saying that it shouldn’t ever make you money otherwise. Yes, it’s,
it needs to make you money. But we can’t attach an outcome to things that we do to create our online business. Like we just, the, the whole point, the whole mindset, the whole attitude really needs to change. Otherwise, it’s just not going to be fun for you. And I’m pretty sure that she didn’t listen to me, but I did say this.
And I said, you know, you need to find a way for this to be fun. And it is going to be a lot of work. And there are going to be a lot of things that you feel like you’re doing that don’t really result in anything, especially not right away. It’s not like I would make a podcast episode of the next day.
I get a thousand sales and then everything is magical. No, it’s a lot of work that seems like it doesn’t create anything. And sometimes you do one thing and it creates a lot. But then there’s like, you didn’t see the 90 things that you know, that that person did before. That, that led up to that moment. So it looks like overnight success,
but it’s not. And this is the nature of the game. You know, if you want a guaranteed result, you need to go get a job with a paycheck and good luck with that being guaranteed. Like that’s not a guarantee either, but I understand that entrepreneurial life and, and being an online business owner and creators is not for everyone. There’s no guarantees with this.
So what are you going to do given that there’s no guarantees. It’s like, you can just put your head down and force yourself to do the work. Meanwhile, secretly you are just waiting for it to pay off. And you’re kinda like just muscling through it. Or you can find a way for this to be fun. I recommend that you change your whole attitude about what you’re doing and find a way to make the process fun.
That is what your focus should be. How can I create content and market my business or my services in a way that’s fun for me without attaching it to an outcome and then just play, just play experiment. Don’t have it mean anything. If, if people sign up or don’t or buy or don’t or watch, or don’t, if you, if you aren’t those results,
it’s okay. It’s just information. But if it’s fun for you that it doesn’t really matter. That’s what your focus should be on. How can I create the content and marketing and all the things that I need to do without attaching it to an outcome and have it be exploration and an experiment and just fond in play. Now, focusing on the work that you love doing inside your business,
that you probably love, right? I mean, why else would you have become a coach or a teacher? You know, you’re, you’re facilitating or instructing or teaching or whatever it is you’re doing. You probably love doing that. It’s probably this other stuff, all this other stuff, you know, you’re coming here to listen to marketing chaos because you’re like,
I don’t know how to do that part. I never went to business school or marketing school. Thank goodness, because I don’t think they teach you anything anyway, but it’s like you weren’t in this to become a marketer. You’re in it to help people to change the world and whatever way that you are changing the world in. And you love doing that.
So focus on that. That is your focus. That should be your focus and try different things. See which ones you’ll actually stick with. And you won’t be good at first. You might be really bad at first, but you will get better and it will become easier. And it will start to make a difference and the results will come, but they may not show up the way that you had to dissipate that they will,
or that you thought that they should. And if you’re attached to them showing up that way, you’re going to be frustrated and disappointed. You might find that the results that you get are more about feeling better in your own world. After creating a recording a podcast. For example, I always know that if I want to, if I’m having a bad day,
if I’ve got up on the wrong side of the bed, it’s like, I love recording these podcasts episodes. Not because of X showing up in my business, like, you know, any kind of results, but just because I love recording the podcast, it’s extra bonus icing on the top. When I get an email, someone saying, you know,
I’ve been listening to your podcast and you know, it’s helping me, or I love it or whatever. Like, that’s amazing. And I love that, but I don’t count on that. I’m not like, oh my gosh, I got no emails this week. You know, I do it because I love it. And, and it doesn’t mean that you have to love podcasts,
but what can you start to do and practice and play with that. You would start to love. Maybe you don’t love it right away. Maybe it’s kind of awkward. It’s kind of like, not really come second nature to you, but it’s something that you can eventually get behind. So try different things. Take videos. When you go out on your walk of nature,
like take pictures, record, you know, podcast, try recording audio, do a Facebook or Instagram live like try different things. All of this is to say that experimenting and play is, is, is what you need to do. That’s going to actually, you’re going to stick to it. If you have an attitude of play and experimentation, the results might be that once in a while,
you know, you make a sale off of it. Or once in a while you get an email that says you made a difference in someone’s life. But if the, if that’s just bonus and you’re not counting on it, then you will stick with it and you will succeed. If you’re only doing what you’re doing to see the sales come in or to see the vanity metrics go up,
like how many people are listening, how many people are watching, how many people are on your email list? Just stop, stop now because it’s not, you’re not going to make it like, if that’s why you’re in it, it’s not going to last, like that will not work. You don’t have what it takes. If you’re in it, because of that,
it won’t work for you. You should stop now and go get a job. This isn’t an easy road and it’s not for everyone. I’m not an entrepreneur because it was an easy thing to do. I literally can’t work for someone else. I think that’s someone I read somewhere that was their definition of entrepreneur. It’s like, you just can’t work for someone else.
Like literally you can’t, I’ve tried. I failed. I make a terrible employee. I don’t really have a choice, but to make it work, you know, I, it means that I’ve got to find a way to make it work. That’s fun and creative. And that adds to my life. It doesn’t take away from my life or my lifestyle.
I mentioned on, I think it was the last episode, how I w it was really, I am behind in recording the episodes because my kids have been out of school. Now. I put them before my business. Most of the time today, they had to go to school early because I had to be on something early. And we had to put them in,
you know, care before school. That’s not me putting my business first. It’s just scheduling. Right? But like, sometimes my work schedule my lifestyle, you know, kids scheduling interferes with, you know, podcast, episode creating. If it, if I didn’t have that flexibility, it wouldn’t work for me. You know, because I do have two young kids and I want to be there for them.
You know, I want that flexibility. I need that flexibility. If I had, if the deal was set up differently, it wouldn’t work for me. Like that is something I love about having my own business is that I get, I do get to call the shots, but you know what? The buck stops here. You don’t have anyone else to pay you at the end of the day.
You’re, you’re in charge of everyone else. You know, that you’re paying and all of that. Like, you’ve got a lot of responsibility and it’s not always fun. And it is a lot of work. So the way I’m going to tell you if your business will succeed or not, is if you find a way to make, even the stuff that you don’t want to do work for you,
and that might be hiring someone to do it, that might be finding a process that you actually enjoy, or a way to get your content out there that you don’t hate. And maybe you start out not hating, and then you kind of become neutral about it. And then you’d be kind of like it a little bit. And eventually you start to really love it.
I don’t know, but it’s like, you’ve got to really commit to that process and have it not be about attaching to an outcome that is a specific result, like number of sales or some other metric that you can’t control, but you can control the process of what you’re doing and what you’re creating. I just get frustrated when I hear people like, oh,
I did it for three months. It’s not working. I’m going to give up. I’m like, oh my gosh. On the other hand, I have to meet with this person again, because I had a meeting with someone else, totally different person. And she was totally downplay what she was creating. I got off the phone thinking, oh, you know,
she’s barely gotten started. And she did tell me she’s been at this for about four years. And I thought, gosh, what have you been doing for four years? Cause she was like, the way she talked about it, I made it sound like she didn’t have very much put together. Then I got off the phone. She had sent me some links.
I got off the phone, I clicked some links. I’m like, oh my goodness, you are a crazy person. Like she has a beautiful website. She has a beautiful YouTube channel. She has been creating this amazing membership. She’s in the membership launch accelerator or academy. And, and she was sharing some of what she had created. So I signed up for a thing just to see,
you know, what she was up to. I’m like, come on, like, she’s got so much going for her and she’s been at it for four years. And now she left a corporate job to create this. She’s been at it for four years. You can tell, despite what she says, that she’s put a lot of her time and energy and,
and heart into it. And she just, it means a lot to her. And you can tell it’s very evident in what she’s putting out to the world. And it’s sort of the other end of the spectrum where she’s like, you know, I don’t have a lot to show for this yet. I’ve been working at it for a really long time,
but I haven’t given up. And I think the difference there is her level of commitment to what she wants to see that she’s creating in the world. And she’s not just going to throw in the towel because she hasn’t seen a ton of sales come in. I don’t even know if she’s made any money off of her business yet. You know, we just met and she’s just getting that part of it started.
But I think if I had to choose between the two, I would say, I put all my money on that second one because she isn’t giving up and she’s not doing it for the results. She’s doing it because she’s committed to the change. She’s creating the world and she loves what she’s doing. She may not love every aspect of it, but she loves what she’s creating.
She’s willing to put in the work I gave her some homework to do. And she was like, yep. As she was willing to do, try different things, you know, she’s, she’s got a business coach, which is the other thing. I think she’s open to suggestions and coaching and she had direction, which is really, really cool to see.
And she’s not like, okay, this must make me money overnight. And she’s been at it for four years. This is probably not good news for some of you who were hoping to hear like, yeah, right, do this. And you will succeed in 3.2 days. No, because that’s not reality. You know, no one can really predict whether or not you’re going to succeed.
And if you’re attached to the results and you want to see results right away, you probably should get a job. That will be a lot more predictable. All my business, creating memberships courses, recurring revenue online is a living, breathing, or organism that changes, you know, the landscape changes. Customers change your business, changes you change. You know,
the platforms that we create, content on changes. It’s always changing. But how cool is that? Like, wouldn’t it be boring if it stayed the same all the time? What if you could find a way to make this process fun, commit to what it is that you want to see created in the world. Enjoy it. Enjoy the process, have fun with it.
Play experiment. Let it be chaos. It’s marketing chaos, baby. Thanks for listening. I’ll see you next time.
