So you’re thinking about starting a wellness membership.
Before getting caught up in complicated platforms and technology, creating a heap of content and overwhelming yourself before you even get started (and almost assuredly then NOT starting), I want to let you know about a very simple method that I’ve coined the “OG” Launch Strategy.
OG stands for original gangsta and is my affectionate term for “my people.” Also known as founding members, your OGs are the first group of people who take the leap and join you in your membership experience.
Tune in to this episode to find out exactly how you can get started with the “OG” Launch Strategy!

You’re listening to marketing chaos, episode number 96. So I am coming to you on a Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. And I just have to share those of you. Parents will understand. And those of you who are not parents will think that this is, this is not a nice thing, but I am just excited. Cuz I have an extra couple of hours before the kids come home. They’re in first grade. So normally they’re home by now by three 30 and we’ve gone to fetch them from school, which means around two o’clock. We have to wrap up for the day and I am not ever done by two o’clock. So I don’t like having to go get the kids then and then come back and finish up work or feel torn. One of the things that I’m really enjoying now is sort of like letting the work, uh, go and focusing on being present with the kids when I’m with the kids or with the work when I’m with the work and having things on done in kids home and running around is just like, doesn’t create ease.
So I’m happy at the moment that it is three 30 and the kids are not home because they do after school activities on Wednesdays. So we have, and I forgot it was Wednesday. So I just said to my husband like, oh, do you want me to go get the kids? And he’s like, it’s Wednesday. And we were like, oh, Wednesday is like, we get to have a little extra break from, from kids anyway. So I am actually excited about our episode today because this is gonna be a treat for you. If you are thinking about starting a wellness membership and you wanna know the simplest way to start. And just before, even though I have a whole list of things I want to talk about just before we started recording, I just Googled just for fun to see what Mr. Google has to say about starting a wellness membership.
And I thought, huh, that is not really the thing that I think people should focus on. So what we are not gonna be talking about today is platforms like, do I use Squarespace or member vault or Facebook group or Kajabi or a plugin for WordPress or where do I put my membership site? My sister-in-law, she contacted me and said she wants to become a health coach and can my program help her to, you know, get started? And I said, you know, I don’t teach people how to create websites and start email list. Like I don’t do that very beginner stuff cuz you can, frankly, just Google it, like go on YouTube. You can easily learn all that stuff. And there’s so many choices and there’s so many great choices nowadays, um, for technology and it it’s just so easy and beautiful things that are like all done for you. And you just kind of have to like plug
Them into whatever you have or if you’re starting out. So that is not what we’re gonna be talking about today, cuz that is just easy stuff you can choose later. What I’m also not gonna talk about today is creating a whole bunch of content before you get started. Because knowing from past experience and also working with hundreds of people that have started memberships and seeing them waste time, uh, before they actually create their membership, creating a bunch of content that people don’t end up using or wanting and it’s not relevant or it was missing the mark. I don’t win you guys to waste any time. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to waste. I got two six year olds, I’ve got, you know, big business to run lots of things. So we’re talking about the simplest way to get started and simple includes technology, but simple also for me is like how not to overcom hit it, but yet have it be effective.
And there is a method that we have been teaching for a while now to start your wellness membership that actually works in itself to validate if your membership is a good idea and it doesn’t involve you having to do much of anything, except for basically write one post or email and present an idea to your audience. So that’s what I’m gonna go through today. I call it the OG launch strategy because I like to call my original members OGs, which stands for original gangsta, which I was informed here in Australia. It didn’t quite make it down under the term OG. Although I know all of you Americans are like, yeah, OG what’s up. Um, apparently Aussie didn’t get the memo. So if you are not an American OG stands for original stop. And I just call my founding members OGs. That’s basically all that is, it makes me laugh.
So as an OG, when you are a founding member of a membership, to me, there’s a really, uh, cool thing that happens because what you get to do as a founding member is, is help determine and shape what that membership is gonna look like for the members that come after you. And if you’re smart as a membership creator, which you will be, cuz you’re listening to this, you are gonna really use the opportunity of having your OGs, helping you create this membership to shape what it is that you’re gonna deliver, how you’re gonna message how you’re gonna use marketing and messaging based on what they say that they need. And they want, they’re struggling with all of those things. And it works really well for both your first group and for you when you’re first starting out.
So before getting caught up in complicated platforms and technology and creating a heap of content and overwhelming yourself before you even get started and then most, almost assuredly not starting instead of all of that, we’re gonna do the OG launch strategy. So this is where you take just an idea, just an idea. I know all of you have an idea what you want your membership to be. Maybe you have lots of ideas, what you want your membership to be. You’re gonna choose one and you’re gonna present it to the people that you are already to two that you feel would be a good fit for this membership. And you’re gonna present them the idea in the form of a vision. So it’s gonna be sort of like I have this vision of working with so and so type of people insert who you’re talking to to help them create transform, whatever it is you’d like to help them with.
So that, and then why, what is in it for them in making that change in their life and their body and their business. So you finish that sentence with so that they can and then paint the picture of what it is you’re going to help them create. So for me, it would be, I have a vision of working with healers and coaches who are just getting started in online business to help them create recurring revenue with memberships and coaching programs so that they have more freedom in choice and that they don’t have to live dollar to dollar an hour to hour and that they have consistency and they start to have predictability in their finances. So that is the idea of what I wanna create with people. So what is it for you? So you have an eye idea of what it is that you wanna do with people and what it is you’d like to create with them.
And you have an idea of what the reason why would be for them. What is it so that they can create? What? So that’s the vision you’re going to paint. You’re also gonna be telling the story of why ha why you, why does this matter to you? And I would bet that you have some sort of backstory that led you to the moment that you’re here right now, wanting to start this membership. Am I right? There’s something that has occurred in your life. Some story you can tell why this matters to you. So you’re gonna give a little bit of the backstory while you’re painting the vision about why this matters to you. People really connect to your why, why it is that you’re doing this. So you’re gonna talk about that. This is why I really have a connection to this audience. This is why I really wanna make a difference for these women or these men or these children or whatever it is you’re doing.
And talk about the why you’re gonna paint this picture of what it is you’d like to create, who you’d like to work with and why, but you’re not gonna have it fully formed. And that is on purpose. So you’re gonna say, this is just an idea. Here are some of the things that I’d like to consider doing with this group of people. And you’re gonna give broad strokes of what you think that you might include in the membership. But you’re gonna emphasize that this is a, an unformed idea that hasn’t yet been actualized into reality. And the cool thing is that you’re gonna leave it open on purpose so that the original members, when they come in, they’re gonna help you create it. So you’re gonna say, would you like to help me create this reply? Yes. If it’s an email or direct message me.
Yes. Private message me. Yes. If it’s on Instagram or if you’re on social media, just, you know, send me a private message saying yes. And that’s it. No payment links. No, uh, you don’t have everything figured out. All it is is an idea, a vision, the backstory and a broad strokes about what it is you think you might be doing together and ask them if they’re interested, what that’s gonna do is two things. One, it’s gonna give you a sense of how many people are interested in helping you create this. And based on how many people you ask and the amount of replies you’re going to know, okay. Was that a lot of people that was like almost to everyone or that was like a very small amount of people or no one and based on the response, you’re gonna know, okay, I’m, I’m really onto something.
Or I need to go back to the drawing board, but guess what? If you get no response or a small response, that is a really good thing to find out now, as opposed to find out six months from now, after you’ve done a whole lot of work creating this thing that then you find out is a little off track. It’s not quite hitting the nail on the head. So this does that’s. Number one, it validates your idea. And number two, it allows you to have people to follow with, with your second email, with a second message. If it’s on social media, but at this point you have identified prime candidate for your first membership. How does it getting you better than that? So now you have a group of people make a list, just grab a Google spreadsheet, write their names down. So you don’t lose track.
If you have emails, if you have, you know, whatever contacts you have. So you have a clear idea of like, okay, this group of people has said yes, now they haven’t paid. Then that’s gonna be a, the next app, but they have expressed interest. And if for you, you see that there’s enough people for you to pursue this idea further. Then we’re gonna go to step two, which is to actually follow up with a payment link and the actual start date of the membership and a, a few more solid details. So at that point, what the email is gonna sound something like, oh my goodness, thank you so much for being interested in this. We had such a great response to this idea. I had no idea. So many of you were out there and you were like on board. So you’re kind of like very excited that they’ve said yes.
And now, now we’re moving forward. So now it’s going to become real. So this is no longer just an idea. This is now we’re taking action. You’ve said that you’d like to help me create it. I can’t wait for you to do that. Here is you sign up. Okay. Would you like to enroll click here? And at that point you have a launch date. You have a start date and you have a payment link. It’s like, it’s on. So this is no longer just in, uh, visionary land. This is in reality. So you don’t want this to be a very long drawn out process, but let’s say you send that first email on March 1st and then you get a bunch of responses. So within the next three or four days, you send the second email saying, wow, we are on. So that’s like by March 5th.
And then you wanna say, okay, it, if you’d like to sign up, click here, payment button, you know, by March 15th and we’ll start right away. Or you can say by April 1st and we start April 1st. So you don’t wanna give them a ton of time. You don’t need a ton of time because now what’s gonna happen is the rate that they’re paying is gonna be they’re. You are going to grandfather them in at that rate, which is gonna be probably about 50% of what the normal rate will be for your membership. That’s a really good deal. And in exchange for this amazing that they’re getting as founding members, as OGs, they’re gonna help you create it. So this is sort of a dealing deliver that you’re creating with these original members. So it’s basically like help me create it. Here’s a best rate. And here’s the deal.
I’m gonna be asking you a lot of questions. I’m gonna be finding out from you what you want. I’m gonna be finding out from you what you’ve been struggling with. And I’m gonna be creating this coaching around where you’ve been struggling. I’m gonna be creating, maybe you have a supplemental with material, information, trainings, products, like whatever it is you have in your membership. You’re gonna be customizing all of that based on what this initial group is asking for. So they get a great rate. You get a lot of information and feedback and it’s a win-win for both of you. It’s so you’re on they’re in, they sign up, they click pay. Now back to the simplest way. All we’ve done so far is send two emails and two social posts, and you could do one or the other. You can do both, but either way, it’s basically the same message on both platforms.
So you’ve just written really two blurbs of information, not a lot of work right now, the payment link is gonna be a live payment link that actually allows them to pay you. So you wanna give them a deadline or cutoff or tell them either they need to pay by X date, or it’s gonna be only available for X number of people. So you’re gonna create urgency that way. And you wanna do that on purpose because you’re giving them a really good deal. You don’t wanna leave that open forever. So you give them a limited number of seats. And then you turn off the link. You don’t allow them to join anymore. Um, after you hit that number of people or you do the same thing, but you do it by day. So one or the other, whichever one you feel like is going to, uh, create more urgency for you.
And if you choose a number of people, I want you to make sure that you can sell out that number of people. So don’t make it a huge number based on your audience. If you have a big audience, then you can do a big number. But if you have a small audience, you wanna make sure you’re gonna sell out. So make it a small enough number that you’re like, yeah, for sure, I will get this many people taking me up on this offer, cuz you do want to sell out now. So, so far we’ve got two emails and a payment link. Now the payment link can just be a PayPal subscription, occurring payment link. All you have to do to create that is have a business PayPal account. Or if you already have some sort of platform shopping cart, whatever to sell things, then create a link through whatever it is you already have.
Stripe can do this. PayPal can do this. If you have any type of online selling any digital products, you’ll be able to create an offer through that system on a recurring basis. Now the key here is that it auto builds them every month is usually, or you could do annual, but basically instead of having to go to the members every single period of time and ask them again to sign up, it’s recurring. So that is kind of like the major point here is that it’s going to continue to bill them every month until they cancel. So you’ve now got two emails, a payment link, and you’ve got a deadline or a cutoff number and your all systems go at that point. You’re gonna see how many people sign up and pay and you’re gonna be committed to yourself and to them to get this thing off the ground.
And the cool thing with that is you’re holding yourself accountable. You’ve now lit a fire under your, but you can’t back out now. You’re going, you won’t. Yes, it is exciting and a little scary, but it’s a really cool chance for you to actually get some revenue in some people in. And you know what? These people are gonna be some of your lifetime customers. They’re gonna be some of your followers for life, you know, and these are gonna be some of the people that help you really create this membership for the future. So what I would do at that point, once you have the paying members in, you know, you’re gonna treat them exceptionally well, you’re gonna nurture the crap out of them. You’re gonna give them such a good experience. They’re gonna just feel like they won the lottery by joining this thing. And you’re gonna ask them a lot of questions and be really a listener of what’s going on for them.
So they’re a little bit of risk on you because this hasn’t been created yet. It’s not proven, it’s not anything someone is raving about cuz it’s new and it’s, it’s, they’re taking a little bit of risk. And so you’re giving them a bit of reward in the form of the best deal that it ever will be. And I would definitely honor that and offer it to anyone in the future for less than what your original members are getting because they are the ones that took the risk from the beginning on you. And they are the ones that should get that return. So now that you’ve got the paying members in there, you’re gonna ask them lots of questions. I do this in lots of ways, person, if you’re seeing them on zoom, like live on the phone, but also you can do surveys. You can do polls inside the group.
But the point is to really be listening to what questions they’re asking, where are they getting stuck? What are they struggling with? What are they asking for help on? And so you’re identifying in their words, what their biggest struggles are, their needs, their wants and desires. And these are paying members who are actually in there. So it’s not a mythical ICA, ideal customer avatar. They’re real people that are actually paying you. So their feedback is worth its weight in gold. And what you’re gonna do from here is create your more professional marketing material. If you will, your more professional sales page, where you’re gonna be inviting the big wide world to based on what these original members have told you. And that you’ve learned from them, you’re going to raise the price when you open it to the public. And you’re going to have already people there that have been paying you, paying attention and getting results.
So you’re gonna and be able to brag about them. So if you have enough time between your original launch and your second launch, that people are already having wins and getting results, you’re gonna use their use their testimonials, their case studies as quote unquote proof that your system, your methods, your coaching is working for people, which it is. And that is gonna be a big, huge, great juicy invitation for the next round of people. So this is essentially what I would focus on. If I was to start a wellness membership from scratch, this is what I did when I started my membership. And this is what all of our students do when they start their memberships. And a lot of them have hit home runs from, from zero to lots and lots of paying members right off the gate. And some of our students have also had smaller launches, but learned a ton, really got it up and running.
I think yesterday we had one of our students say she had just launched her membership and that there was no replacement for the knowing, the learning that she got in actually running her membership. And she was so glad that she got it up and running and she’s had another like six new members, uh, students join and she’s just learning a ton from them. So I always say, it’s, there’s no replacement for doing the actual work with paying members with real life people learning from them, asking lots of questions. You don’t have to get it perfect before you start. You’re not gonna get it right the first time, but you are going to provide value, especially if you are willing to listen and make pivots and changes when people are asking for it and when you can provide it. So I hope this has given you a little inspiration and a little nudge forward to get your membership up and running and it doesn’t have to be hard folks. So thanks so much for listening. If you’d like us to help you create your membership, go to work with Laurie marie.com and you can apply there. Bye for now.
