You’re listening to marketing chaos, episode 84. So it’s the beginning of January people. Are you excited about the new year? I love the new year. I feel like it’s a fresh start. I know it’s just a date on the calendar, but somehow getting through the holidays and you know, it just, it feels like everything stops no matter what I do every year to not let it stop at the holiday time, it’s like, I might still be going, but everyone else is stopping. So it’s hard to get things done. And I, you know, for many years resisted that here in Australia, it’s very hot and I think everyone is on vacation and they’re just doing nothing and they love doing nothing. And it’s very frustrating for me because I love to create. And I’m like, where is where, where is everyone? And I just kind of like went with it this year and I really embraced the downtime and the relaxation.
I cramed in a ton of stuff before and then had Christmas holidays and a break gave my staff, you know, time off and just said, Hey, you know, we’re taking a couple weeks to chill. The kids are out of school. It’s like this long break for them. It’s summertime before they go back to first grade or go into first grade, they they’re leaving, uh, kindergarten and they’re going to first grade. Oh my gosh. I can’t even believe I have two first graders, but it’s good. I love the year and new possibilities. And when I get excited about creation, I feel like I’m just on fire, but that’s not what we’re talking about today. Today. We’re talking about what to do when it feels like nothing is working. So I am little bit of a drama queen. And I think if my husband was listening or anyone on my staff or any of my friends, they would probably say a little, yeah, just a little, a little drama queen.
And especially in my business when things are good, they’re great. And I’m like, oh my gosh, I’m probably the next Richard Branson, Elon Musk watch out, you know, I’m like just on fire <laugh> and then I’ll have like one failed launch and I have no business. I should get a job. I don’t even know what I’m doing. Or if I am helping anyone and I’m like total drama. So I get it. <laugh>, I’m laughing at myself because I can laugh at myself now. But I know it’s not very funny when you’re in the heat of the moment and it feels like nothing is working. And so this episode is, this goes out to you on those days. If you’re like me and you’re having a, uh, what do they call those Latino soap operas? And it, I get it’s like dios mio. It’s like, I, I get it.
So when things feel like they’re just not working, I wanna give you a question to ask, actually, I’m gonna give you a lot of questions to ask, but the first one is, is your business actually screaming at you to change? So this happened recently for me. And if you’ve heard the recent episodes about when my brain broke and I went into burnout and I had a failed launch and I was like in a catatonic state and speaking of drama, I just couldn’t think my, my, I felt like it hurt. It hurt to think. And I thought, this is probably it for me. Like, I, what, you know, what was I thinking? Having a business? Like, I can’t do this. I should just give up. I should go get a job. I don’t even know. I don’t know how to do anything. What am I gonna do anyway?
Uh, which is very funny because I’ve, I haven’t had a job. I don’t think for 20 years, I’ve always been an entrepreneur. And yet <laugh>, I still will go to that place when something doesn’t work. But what I realized was recently, so this launch that we did was a bit of an epic fail and like, you know, insert gift of doing a total face plant on the ground or something equally as embarra thing and horrific and painful. And what I realized was my eye and my business have changed so much and I hadn’t actually acknowledged the change. And it was a bit screamy. It was screaming at me to change and I hadn’t listened. And this was sort of the universe’s way of slapping me upside the head <laugh> and like getting me to pay attention because I couldn’t not pay attention to a failed launch that was supposed to, you know, it was supposed to bring in a bunch of revenue in the year on.
And I had basically accounted for that money for a bunch of things and it didn’t happen. So first thing I wanna tell you is you’re not alone. If you have done a lot of work, put together, a bunch of stuff spent a lot of hours, time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears, and gotten no results or even worse spent money, a lot of money on something without it paying off, whether that be investing in a course or a mentor or ads or whatever it is. Um, this is sort of like comes with the territory of being an entrepreneur. It’s like a battle scar, I think. And if anyone tells you, they don’t have one, send them to me. I wanna talk to them, but all the good entrepreneurs I know will say like, you’ve gotta fail. You’ve gotta fail. And I would embrace the failure. I would embrace it, not as a failure, but I would embrace it.
After you pick yourself up off the ground, you know, you have a good ugly cry, and you have your Ben and Jerry’s or bottle of champagne and the bathtub, whatever it is that for you, that you need to do, taking some time off, lick the wounds and all of that, and have a look. If your business is actually requiring to change in a major way. And for me, that’s really what I, I came to was wow. Uh, yeah, it needs to change like everything. And I fire and my whole staff, I actually let everyone go. I said, uh, some of them, it was more obvious. It had been coming for a while. Some of them like my, uh, creative producer, who’s been with me, she’s gonna be editing this episode. <laugh> uh, I didn’t wanna let her go. I absolutely adore working with her. And I told her, I was, I love you.
I adore you. I have to fire you. <laugh>. And she’s like, I get it. And she knew it too. And it’s like, it’s like a relationship, like a, you know, a boyfriend or girlfriend that it’s just it’s, it’s done, but you still really care about them. But like, the relationship is over and no one’s wanting to end it. But when someone, the other person’s actually really grateful, <laugh> like, thanks for doing the hard part of that, cuz it, it needed to change. So I fired miles staff and I got rid of everything in my business. As far as like energetically, I was willing for it all to go away. I was like, okay, I could just have no business. Um, I could, you know, I could keep this part of the business. I could keep that or I could let it all go. I could change.
It could be totally different. Like maybe I go in, you know, do something completely D like I just let everything be a possibility. And I really started to ask my business questions. Like, what does it wanna occur? What does it it want? Like, what does it wanna be and do in the world? Like, what’s fun for me. Like I had sort of lost my mojo, not sort of, I totally lost my mojo. And I just went like back to the drawing board completely. And when I created this, uh, podcast, the new one, the new title, marketing chaos, that that was the first spark of something different. And I knew that it was, was like holding a lantern and I’m gonna start walking down this new path. And this new path was really, uh, about discovering and, and trusting my awareness of what’s possible and adding something different to what exists out there already, which there’s plenty of.
There’s plenty of marketing podcasts and I’m super grateful. You’re listening to this one. You don’t have to, there are lots of them. And there’s a reason why you’re probably listening to this one given, especially the name and that it is different. And I was like, okay, if everything out there is already what it is and it’s great. What, what is it that I bring to the table? And what I had been doing prior to this was looking at maybe doing a slightly better version or my version or spin of something, but it wasn’t completely different because I’m like, well, that’s working. Let me just do what other people are doing, cuz it’s working and I’ll just do it their way. And I was like, okay, this sucks. And now that I’m actually willing for all to go away, that was a space I needed to get to order to truly create it from the space of my being and like really, okay, this is, this is my baby.
I’m gonna give birth to now when you give birth to a baby or two in the case of twins, like I had, um, they’re not yours like they are, but they’re not like you give birth to them. So that is part, part comes from you. But then they’re this thing like this creature, this entity of their own, and they take on a whole life of their own as they should, you know, they’re their own beings, same thing with your business. Like your business may have come from you, but it has its own energy. So first thing when things feel like it’s, nothing’s working, first thing I would do is ask, okay, is, is this basically screaming for change?
And if you get a yes, like, yes, okay, this is actually the change that I’ve been asking for showing up in a way I had not expected. Then that’s actually cool. And that’s a really good thing. And we wanna lean into that change and that difference rather than resist it because what happens when you resist a change, but it actually requires being made is nothing good. Like nothing good comes from that. Um, sometimes really crappy things occur and sometimes mediocre things occur, but I would say nothing great ever comes from that. Like again with the relationship that needs to end and it doesn’t end. It’s like, it’s never gonna be great again, let’s just face it. So sometimes relationships end and then they are reborn and they are re are created a new, but it’s like essentially a different relationship and acknowledging that of your business.
So I was like, okay, business, like you’re, you’re basically done podcast. You’re basically done. Like this is a new podcast. My staff is all fired. Now I rehired a couple of them already. And, but it was on really different terms and it was really from a different space and it was, and we were really clear on that job is done. That role is over that relationship’s ended now that that’s done, what can we create? And we’re starting to play with that and create new relationships with my staff that I’ve brought back on. And I’m looking to fill a couple of new roles as well that I didn’t have before. And I’ve let go of two roles that I may not hire again, but it’s all different. And then I looked at my offers the same way and, and I looked at, okay, this course sold really well.
And it was a lot of work to put on. Now, how could I do it differently? Like what would be fun if I was gonna create this course again? Cuz obviously people want it. People are like, love it. It’s just sold really well. I, I enjoy creating the, with the people on like it’s all good and how can I do it differently? So we’re turning it into a 90 day program instead of an eight week course. And it’s gonna be something that people can join more regularly rather than we did like one launch of it in 2020 and one launch in 2021. And I did it eight week, you know, module one module two. And we went through like that. Now we’re gonna do it, just a different, uh, a different fulfillment of that, which isn’t the interesting part. But the interesting part is like I looked at it and how we could create out, create it basically out create is like create it, but better like greater.
So get at what we could do to out create it. And this idea of this sort of like 90 day program came up and I’m playing with how to like what to add and who to add to make it easier. So we’re like hiring a whole, uh, team of people like coaches, copywriters designer, like other things that I can do, but there’s obviously people who do that. Like if that’s their specialty, if they’re great at it and um, and bringing a whole team together to provide the support for my students so that I don’t have to do it all on my own. And so that they get an even better experience. So that was like an example of the business is screaming for change and it’s not a problem. It looked like a problem. But when I actually allowed it to essentially destroy and uncreate, what we had destroy had created, and now we’re creating from a new space it’s really flowing and it’s really exciting. And it’s like, everything’s just ease. And that’s what you wanna look at is like, okay, where’s the ease? Like where’s the flow. And if it’s not that something is off, something needs to change. So what is it that your business is asking for that you haven’t been listening about?
What is it your business has been asking you for that you haven’t been listening to? <affirmative> what if you just be with that question for a little bit, like allow your business to start talking to you. Second question is what change have you been avoiding or absolutely refusing to make? There’s like, like firing that one person that I really valued in my company that was a choice I was refusing to make, but it was sort of obvious to both of us that it needed to happen, but neither of us I think, wanted to make that decision or, or, or pull that plug or, or whatever. But it was a such an obvious choice that I was absolutely refusing to make. I was like, okay, if, if there was one thing that I would be unwilling to lose, it would be like that person. And I was like, well, that’s kind of silly because my business isn’t that person, you know? And it, and that’s another, maybe the next question that leads me to is who have you made more valuable than you in your business? So whether that’s a staff member or your actual clients or customers, your, your participants that come to your classes or the people that are paying you money basically, or maybe it’s another coach or facilitator like someone that’s in your space like a peer or maybe it’s a mentor, someone that taught you one of your teachers or mentors, anyone that you’re making more valuable than you in your business is a limit.
So have a look at that for you, like who have you made more valuable than you in your business? And what if you let that go, you don’t have to necessarily let them go. But letting that energy of them being the valuable product go because you are the valuable product in your business, you and your business. So what are you holding onto? If you’re willing to let go of absolutely everything, you will have so much freedom and so much more doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everyone and get rid of everything. But if you’re holding on or UN willing to let go of them or it, then that creates the space that you can never go beyond or the place that you can never go beyond. So that becomes a limitation.
And now ask, what could you choose that would actualize the change your business is asking for. So at means that it shows up and it’s in reality. So your business is asking for a change. So what choice do you have if you wake up and ask, okay, business, what action can I take today? What choice can I make today to help you to sh show up the way that you’re desiring your business will start to grow. Your business will take the shape that it desires. And most importantly, don’t judge, don’t judge your business. Don’t judge that it’s not working. So when you say like, oh, nothing’s working, that’s actually a judgment. So it failing or it not working is a judgment. It’s doing something. But if we didn’t judge it or call it a failure or say, it’s not working, we would actually be able to look at it for what it is and have a, have a look at what it requires changing.
But as soon as we judge something, it locks it in place. It can’t change. It. Can’t go beyond that. So we have a look at like, okay, this is what it is. Like, there were no sales. That’s just a fact. All right. How does it get any better than that? You know, look at what is, but don’t judge it. That was a failure that sucked. That was wrong. That was bad. That was horrible. Those are all judgments. So we just look at, okay, zero sales. Now let’s ask some questions. You know, what needs to change? Sometimes it’s a small thing. Like the way the messaging about that offer didn’t work. It like didn’t resonate with your audience. Sometimes it’s a big thing. Like entire program is just not, is not gonna sell it just isn’t what people want or it isn’t the time for it.
Sometimes we create things too far in the future. Like it’s, it’s the movie, um, general magic is a great movie example about how the greatest invention of a smartphone that, and this business that no one ever knows about or will ever hear about because it, it failed because it was like a decade, uh, too early people weren’t ready for it. You know, the smartphone, wasn’t an invention that people were ready for now, 10 years later, someone else created it. And obviously it was a major success, but the timing was wrong 10 years earlier, it was too early. So don’t judge that. It’s not working ask questions about what is actually required to change it. And what did work about it. Sometimes there’s parts to something that worked really well. And, and when we, it’s sort of like we throw in the towel, we just say, oh, that didn’t work.
You’re missing out on a whole lot of valuable awareness and information. And acknowledging that, like, you know, this one person did a really great job promoting this class or this, you know, the Facebook group, uh, the free group that went with this was really great, but the, you know, whatever didn’t sell or something else didn’t go very well. But look at what did work instead of going to nothing is working. So avoid lumping, like putting it all together and just doing the dramatic thing that I do is like, I have no business. Well, look at what really occurred and possibly look like, take a step back, take a deep breath, look at a broader, like, get some space from it. You know, take a break and have a look at the larger space, the bigger picture. So zoom out. What is working in your business?
What is working with your offers? Maybe you have a, a podcast that’s really fun to create. And lots of people love it. Well, that’s something that is working. Maybe you have one staff member. Who’s just like you work really well with and it’s, and it’s going really well. Well, that’s something that is working. Maybe you have one class or one course or a membership that sells really well or has sold once really well. Well, that’s something that’s really working. So start redirecting your focus on the things that are working and all of the things that you’ve decided like is failing or aren’t working focus on what has worked and what is working and start saying yes to more of the things that have that energy to them. When you ask the questions about creating them. So if I look at the course that we’ve created sold twice, and it has been like the biggest, you know, seller, I’m gonna do more of that.
Now it could literally be doing that course, offering that course more, or it could be doing more of what works with that, which I need to dive into a bit more. What is it about that course? That works really well. Why does that sell so well for me? And it could be a number of things, my experience, my history, my, um, the, the roles that I’ve had in other businesses related to that topic, give me a certain level of expertise and authority. That’s one thing. It could also be how I am with the subject. Like, it could be the way that I talk about it, the energy I have with it, like the joy that it brings me when I work with people on that, it can also be, it’s just what people want right now. I mean, it could be all three of those things.
So there’s a lot around that that you can dig into when you, you start looking at, okay, why is this, this particular thing working and not figuring out why or, or concluding like, okay, this is working because, but really getting like curious, curious, like, I’m just curious, why is this working? And what is working you really well about this? And then looking at with the same curiosity, like a two year old asking why, why, why, why, why three year old, four year old, five year, my six and a half year old, still every single thing wants to know why <laugh>, I don’t know why president. It just is <affirmative> so getting curious, like a three or four year old and just, why didn’t it work? What about it? Didn’t work and why, and really just being kind and taking, taking it easy on yourself and don’t go to the place of, I have failed.
I am a failure. I’m going to give up now. Never give up, never give in, never quit. When it feels like nothing is working, there’s a whole lot that you can do to change that feeling and recognize it as a feeling. It doesn’t mean that it’s real, just because it’s a feeling and start to be easy on you and acknowledge, like, what if you put as much energy into the things that are working as you do on the things that don’t feel like they are working. It’s like you could have a hundred good comments on social media and that one, that one hater it’s like, it just sticks you. And you’re like, well, that’s a matter of choice. And what you focus on, you do not have to choose to focus on the things that aren’t working. You can take steps, really pragmatically to focus your energy on what is making a gratitude journal.
First thing, when you wake up in the morning, list, three things you’re grateful for focus on that. Be intentional about really like thinking and feeling of the energy of gratitude. Being in that space of happy and grateful like that you have, what you have is a way of intentionally redirecting your energy that will show up differently in your day. Your day will start to be different when you redirect your energy. So what to do when it feels like nothing is working, ask if something requires changing, go to question, not conclusion, ask lots of questions about what that change is. Let go, be willing to let go of anything and anyone stop making other people more valuable than you in your business and start acknowledging like what contribution that you have in your business that no one else does stop judging. <laugh> stop. You can literally stop when judgment occurs, it doesn’t occur.
You’re choosing it. Stop. So catch yourself, catch yourself, going to that place and stop, make a conscious choice to choose a different thought, a different feeling, a different energy, and start developing your own guidance system for choosing what to follow, what to believe and what choices to make and acknowledge the things that are working and really intentionally redirect your focus on those when it feels like nothing else is working. I also on a practical note, ask for advice from someone who has gone before you in that area. Make sure you’re not asking advice for someone who is less, um, great in that area that you’re looking at changing, and that’s not a judgment. That’s really just, okay. If I wanna learn how to become a great stock trader, I’m gonna ask someone who has made a lot of money trading stocks. I’m not going to ask someone who’s just started or has lost a bunch of money or necessarily, um, I’m gonna look at someone who’s actually gone before me and has done great in that area and has something to offer me.
And then I’m gonna ask questions about it for me, because it may not work for me the way it works for them. A great piece of advice that Steve Bowman, who, uh, he and his wife Jusa have an amazing business on and they teach corporate, uh, business how to do lots of things, I think. Uh, but amongst them, I asked him about, uh, stock training and investment. And I, I asked Steve like which books he would recommend. And the response that he gave is something that I take into piece of, uh, exploration and, and learning based on what he told me, which is any book, just choose any book. And I was like, what, how can you be recommending any book? And he said, well, doesn’t matter what book you pick up. Every book has truths and lies and the trick to read it and to listen and, uh, pay attention to what’s true and throw away the rest.
And he said, it doesn’t matter what book you pick up. All of them will have those two things, some truths and some lies. So literally just grab a book, any book on stock trading, but be in question with the advice that it’s giving you based on the, in the, of light and heavy. So if it’s light, it’s true. If it’s heavy, it’s a lie, pick up any book and learn. So this I think is something that I’ve taken into the world of marketing. And when I hear a piece of advice, it will stand out for me that there’s something true about that. I’m like, Ooh, this is really juicy. This is really fun. This feels light. I like this. This is cool. And then usually on top of that, there’s something about it that goes clunk. And that’s where you wanna go, hang on. What’s that? And it’s usually where they’ve come to conclusion. So they’ll say something and it’s really expansive in light. And then they’ll tell you that that is the way it is. Or they’ll say you have to do that 10 times. And you’re just like, wait, what? So that’s where they stop asking questions. They go to conclusion and they try to make an answer out of something that could be a possibility. So pay attention, be aware to those things,
Always ask. What’s true about this. And what’s a lie for everything. Every piece of advice that you have and things will get greater for you. I hope that this was giving you some inspiration and hope. If you are in a place where right now, it feels like nothing is working. Be it easy on you and give, give a break, give some space to yourself, your body really be nurturing and caring for, for you and your body. And it’ll still be there. You know, leave it, take a, take a walk, come back, you know, fresh, fresh space to it. And, and it will, you’ll see more. You’ll feel more hopeful if you give it a little space, that’s it for today. I’ll see you next time. Thanks for listening. Bye for now.
